Anthony Gordon and Steven Gerrard each donate £10,000 to victims of the Southport stabbing attack as the Merseyside football stars pledge support on GoFundMe page

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has generously contributed £10,000 to support the victims of the tragic knife attack in Southport, which has resulted in the deaths of three children and left several others critically injured. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has also pledged the same amount.

Gordon, who hails from Merseyside, has made his significant donation to a GoFundMe page that has surpassed £60,000 in total funds raised.

A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbings of three girls during a dance class themed around Taylor Swift that took place on Monday.

The deceased include six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

Moreover, eight other children sustained stab wounds in the horrifying incident, with five young victims remaining in critical condition, along with two women who courageously tried to assist them.

Alice, nine, died in the early hours of Tuesday after a hooded knifeman entered the holiday club and began stabbing the children in attendance.

Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, was also killed in the tragic attack.

Bebe King, six, was the youngest child killed at the holiday club in Southport, Merseyside.

Gordon’s donation, made on Wednesday evening, represented the largest contribution to the Southport Dance Group Emergency Fund until Gerrard matched it shortly thereafter.

Both contributions led the GoFundMe page, showcasing the support from the football community, with their names appearing next to two £10,000 donations.

Gerrard, a footballing icon in Liverpool, made his donation just a day after his former club paid their respects in Southport.

Robbie Fowler and Phil Thompson also visited the site of the tragedy, laying a wreath in solidarity with Everton representatives as both clubs united in support.

Investigations into the motive behind the attack continue.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy stated following the suspect’s murder charge: ‘While these charges represent a significant development in the investigation, this case remains active as we work with Lancashire Police and Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW) to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

‘I extend my gratitude to all the forces that have provided assistance to Merseyside Police over the last three days, as we receive investigative support from across the North West.’

Gerrard and Gordon’s £10,000 donations are the leading amounts on the GoFundMe page.

Sarah Hammond, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire, announced: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized Merseyside Police to charge a 17-year-old male from Banks, Lancashire, with three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder following the devastating event in Southport this week.

‘He will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 1, 2024. We remind everyone that the legal process is ongoing and that the defendant is entitled to a fair trial.

‘It is crucial to refrain from any reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that may prejudice these proceedings.

‘Our thoughts remain with the families who have been impacted by these distressing events.’
