Coco Gauff, the talented tennis player, has been chosen as the female flagbearer for Team USA at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris this Friday.

The 20-year-old Grand Slam champion now joins basketball legend LeBron James, who was named the male flagbearer earlier this week on Monday.

This marks Gauff’s debut at the Olympic Games, having won the 2023 US Open.

“I could have never imagined that I would have the privilege of carrying the American flag for Team USA during the opening ceremony,” Gauff expressed.

“I am extremely proud to lead my teammates alongside LeBron as we demonstrate our commitment and enthusiasm on this grand stage.”

At the beginning of the year, Gauff reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon this month.

The last American woman to win Olympic gold in singles tennis was Serena Williams at the 2012 London Games.

Gauff was selected alongside Jessica Pegula as part of the women’s tennis team representing Team USA.

The opening ceremony on Friday night will take place on the River Seine, marking a historic first as the summer Olympic opening ceremony will be held outside of a main stadium.
