A Republican congressman who has previously initiated impeachment proceedings against Vice President Kamala Harris is attracting attention nationwide as Tennessee approaches its primary elections this Thursday.

Rep. Andy Ogles, a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus and an outspoken opponent of President Biden’s administration, is contending with a primary challenge from Nashville councilwoman Courtney Johnston as he aims for a second term in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District.

Ogles, who filed impeachment articles against both President Biden and Harris last year, pursued impeachment against the vice president once again following her ascension to the top of the Democrats’ national ticket.

Two years ago, Ogles encountered multiple controversies while winning a crowded primary contest in the newly drawn 5th District, encompassing southern Nashville and its neighboring suburbs as well as rural areas.

Despite both backing conservative policies, Johnston brands Ogles as a “do-nothing grandstander” whom she claims is “entrenched in scandals.”

However, Ogles is backed by former President Trump, the party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election, alongside support from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Sen. Bill Hagerty.

Johnston, on the other hand, has received endorsements from several establishment Republicans, including former Sens. Bill Frist and Bob Corker, as well as former Gov. Bill Haslam.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican and former House representative, is the frontrunner in her pursuit of a second six-year term in the Senate, facing a GOP primary challenge from Tres Wittum, a former state Senate policy analyst who finished last in the primary for the 5th Congressional District two years ago, which Ogles won.

The Democratic side also features a competitive primary race.

Additionally, there are primaries for state Senate and House seats, where Republicans maintain supermajorities in the largely red state.
