The first woman to hold the mayoral position in a Louisiana town has resigned just days before facing charges related to sexual relations with a minor.
Mayor Misty Roberts Clanton, aged 42, left her position as the mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, nearly a week ahead of accusations brought against her by a juvenile victim.

On August 1, Clanton surrendered to officials from the Louisiana State Police Special Victim’s Unit at the Beauregard Parish Detention Center.

The ex-mayor faces charges of third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of minors, as reported by the Louisiana State Police. The age of the juvenile victim involved has not been disclosed.
In an interview with a local magazine in May 2024, Clanton expressed her intention to seek re-election for mayor in 2026. She is also a mother of two, including a 14-year-old son.

“On July 26, 2024, the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office requested the Louisiana State Police Special Victim’s Unit (LSP SVU) to investigate a complaint against the former Mayor of DeRidder for allegations of sexual relations with a juvenile,” stated the Louisiana State Police in a press release.

“The investigation led to the arrest of 42-year-old Misty Roberts.”
“As the investigation advanced, LSP SVU interviewed two juveniles, including the victim. Both juveniles corroborated that Roberts had sexual relations with the juvenile victim while she served as Mayor,” the statement elaborated.

Clanton has been released on a $75,000 bond, and the investigation is ongoing.
