Ukraine secured the gold medal in the women’s sabre fencing team competition after a nail-biting final against South Korea at the Paris Games on Saturday.
Olga Kharlan, who earned an individual bronze and brought home Ukraine’s first medal in Paris, delivered an outstanding performance that propelled her team to victory, marking the country’s inaugural gold at the 2024 Games.
With the enthusiastic crowd at the Grand Palais cheering her on, Kharlan achieved a total of 22 touches, earning her sixth Olympic medal. This victory also marks Ukraine’s second gold in this event, previously winning in the 2008 Games held in Beijing.
Ukraine matched the two gold medals claimed by Russia in 2016 and 2021. The former president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, celebrated the remarkable victory, stating, “Unyielding nerves! Exceptional talent! An incredibly intense match, a battle to the very last moment, superb performance from our athletes. Overwhelming emotions, a historic achievement,” in a post on X.
