The House Freedom Caucus is considering who might assume leadership of the ultra-conservative group, as its current chairman, Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., is expected to vacate his position.

Several sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to Fox News Digital, suggest that Good will resign following his loss in the primary this past June and a subsequent recount that reduced his margin by a few hundred votes. Good had previously indicated he would step down.

This situation presents a novel challenge for the GOP rebel faction, as no chairman has ever resigned before completing a term, and no sitting chair has ever lost their re-election bid.

According to two sources familiar with internal discussions, there is a possibility that former Freedom Caucus chair Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., or Scott Perry, R-Pa., may take over Good’s responsibilities for the remainder of his term.

However, sources indicate that discussions seem to favor Biggs slightly more.

“I will advocate for Andy Biggs to lead for the remainder of Bob’s term. He supported Trump and is already familiar with the chair position,” one member of the Freedom Caucus told Fox News Digital.

Biggs did not provide comments when contacted through a spokesperson, and a spokesperson for Perry also refrained from commenting.

One of the previously mentioned sources noted that Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who chairs the group’s policy committee, is also being considered as a potential successor.

However, Roy, who also heads the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the Constitution and limited government, has not publicly expressed interest in the position.

Freshman Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., has also expressed interest in the role, according to another source. However, it remains unclear whether he aims to serve the rest of the year filling in for Good or if he intends to participate in the group’s closed-door election for a new term, typically held at year’s end.

Ogles’ office did not reply to a request for comments, and Roy declined to comment through a spokesperson regarding private discussions.

Last week, Politico reported that both Perry and Biggs were being evaluated to complete Good’s term.

Both have significantly better relationships with former President Trump compared to Good, a rift that contributed to Good’s political downfall.

Trump endorsed Good’s primary opponent, John McGuire, and openly criticized the Virginia conservative’s re-election bid. Initially, Good had endorsed Trump’s primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, before switching his support to the former president once DeSantis withdrew from the race.

A spokesperson for the Freedom Caucus told Fox News Digital, “The HFC does not provide comments on membership or internal procedures.”

Good’s term as chairman has been tumultuous, with several members departing the group this year.

Most recently, Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, who was critical of Good’s leadership, was expelled from the Freedom Caucus shortly after endorsing McGuire in the primary.

Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, resigned in protest on the same day of Davidson’s ouster.
