Vice President Kamala Harris is nearing the conclusion of her search for a running mate, but there is still division among Democrats about who should be selected for the party ticket.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is seen as the leading candidate, although Harris reportedly interviewed multiple finalists on Sunday. She is set to publicly appear with her running mate at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The three finalists whom Harris interviewed on Sunday included Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, as reported by CNN.
Within the Democratic Party, opinions differ significantly on the best choice for Harris to boost her candidacy as Election Day approaches.

Harris has already surpassed President Biden’s standing in polling, with current data indicating a tightly contested race, where Trump holds only a minimal edge.

The campaign plans to reveal Harris’ running mate through an online communication to supporters. Four years prior, Biden’s campaign announced Harris as his pick through a text message sent to supporters on August 11, 2020.

The selection of candidates illustrates Harris’s awareness of the necessity for a running mate who can draw in moderate voters, in light of her more progressive voting history in the Senate.
“I believe she should choose someone who is more centrist than herself. A candidate with significant ground-level governance experience would be beneficial,” commented former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on ABC News’ “This Week.”

Shapiro could provide a strategic advantage come Election Day, as Pennsylvania serves as a key swing state, while Walz’s Minnesota tends to be more reliably Democratic.
Senator John Fetterman, D-Penn., has privately advised Harris against choosing Shapiro, citing concerns that Shapiro is too focused on “his own personal ambitions.”
The two have reportedly had tensions in the past during their engagements in Pennsylvania politics.
