A man from Texas received a 40-year prison sentence following a plea deal after admitting to the murder of his newlywed spouse.
On Wednesday, Judge Gary Chaney handed down the sentence to Jared James Dicus, who was convicted of decapitating 21-year-old Anggy Diaz and leaving her head in the shower in 2023.
Now 23, Dicus pleaded guilty to murder, and his first opportunity for parole will not be until 2043. The Waller County District Attorney’s Office collaborated with Diaz’s family before finalizing the plea agreement and subsequent sentencing.
Prior to the trial, questions regarding Dicus’s mental health and competency to stand trial were raised, but a court-ordered assessment concluded that he was indeed competent to proceed.

Under the plea agreement, Dicus relinquished his right to appeal the conviction, the sentence, and any possible defenses, including an insanity plea. He also waived his right to file any post-conviction writ of habeas corpus.
“Waller County does not tolerate domestic violence. Heinous crimes like this one will not go unanswered,” stated Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore. “We will seek justice for the victims of domestic violence and send a message to the perpetrators that here, we fight for our victims.”
Diaz, who worked as counter help at a local establishment, was originally from Nicaragua. According to her family, she was initially under the care of an aunt upon her arrival in the U.S. last year.

Dicus was charged with the murder of Diaz in January 2023, just three months after their marriage. Authorities from the Waller County Sheriff’s Office discovered Diaz lying on the couple’s bedroom floor in a pool of blood, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her back, with her head located in the shower.
Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry reported that evidence indicated a kitchen knife was used in the murder, stating that “all parts and pieces were recovered.”
Following Diaz’s passing, Dicus confessed to investigators that he was responsible for his wife’s murder.
