Stars of “Melrose Place,” Andrew Shue and Courtney Thorne-Smith, shared insights on how they handled their on-screen kissing scenes while navigating their off-screen breakup during the popular ’90s series.
The 56-year-old actor and the 58-year-old actress portrayed characters with a tumultuous romance that spanned several seasons of the FOX soap opera. Shue and Thorne-Smith began dating off-screen shortly after the first season premiered in 1992, but their relationship eventually ended.
In a recent appearance on the “Still The Place” podcast, Shue and Thorne-Smith reminisced about managing their characters’ relationship after their split.

“We managed it quite well,” Shue added. “There was a brief period that was challenging.”
After their breakup, Thorne-Smith recounted having a discussion with Shue about establishing clear boundaries for their characters’ intimate scenes.
“Do you remember our conversation about needing to maintain professionalism since our characters were still dating while we had broken up?” the “Ally McBeal” star asked. “We had been apart for two months when we had to film a kiss. I said, ‘Alright, remember, we’re just professionals here, no tongue!'”

“Because we began dating prior to our roles on the show and continued our on-screen romance after breaking up, things were a bit unique,” Thorne-Smith explained. “However, we transitioned into a friendship seamlessly. I don’t recall any significant tension.”

Shue concurred, saying that they supported each other as they rapidly gained fame following the success of “Melrose Place.”
“It was surprisingly not weird.”
“Yes, we were there for each other during an incredibly intense time,” Shue said. “The show received an enormous amount of attention. Although you were already somewhat famous, we were both navigating what you could call Fox celebrity madness.”
“I remember feeling reassured knowing we were together, guiding one another through it all,” added Shue, known for his role in “The Rainmaker.”

Shue was previously married to floral designer Jennifer Hageney, with whom he has three sons, from 1994 to 2008. He then married “Good Morning America” co-anchor Amy Robach in 2010, but they separated in August 2022 after reports surfaced of Robach’s affair with her GMA co-anchor T.J. Holmes.
Shue and Robach’s divorce finalized in March 2023. Holmes and his spouse Marilee Fiebig also reportedly separated in August 2022, finalizing their divorce in October 2023.
Robach and Holmes went public with their relationship in November 2022. Following their respective divorces, Shue and Fiebig began dating in December 2023.
Meanwhile, Thorne-Smith married geneticist Andrew Conrad in 2000, but their marriage lasted only a year. She later married author Roger Fishman in January 2007, and they share a son, Jacob, who is 16.
