Paul Hudson secured a win in the Republican primary for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, recognized as one of the most fiercely contested races nationwide.

With the Associated Press calling the race, Hudson was ahead of Michael Markey Jr. with a margin of approximately 55% to 45%.

Markey Jr. emphasized his business background throughout the campaign, branding himself as a “disrupter” committed to making progress if he were to win a congressional seat.

“I’m like, ‘Why are we using, you know, what makes me a disrupter?’ [My team is] like, ‘Mike, you started your first business at 14, entered real estate before turning 15, and founded a financial firm during the worst economic crisis we’ll hopefully see in our lifetimes,’” he shared with ABC News 13 in an earlier interview. “They said, ‘That’s what makes you a disrupter. You go against the grain and get results.’”

Hudson, an attorney, campaigned on a platform focused on stability. He expressed that the voters in the district feel “uneasy” about the current political landscape and promised “common sense in crazy times.”

“When I speak with voters, I sense a profound discomfort regarding the state of our country right now, with a widespread feeling that we are heading in the wrong direction,” Hudson stated to ABC News 13.

Hudson will now compete against Democrat incumbent Rep. Hillary Scholten in the general election this November.

Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, encompassing all of Grand Rapids and its surrounding areas, is regarded as one of the largest swing districts in the nation. The state’s recent 2022 redistricting has made the district notably more competitive.

Scholten, currently in her first term, successfully took the district from former Republican Rep. Peter Meijer in 2022. The Cook Political Report designates the district as a “likely” win for Democrats in this year’s elections.
