Malo Gusto will start the season at right-back while Reece James serves a three-match suspension in the Premier League due to a red card received in the second-to-last match of the previous season.

However, both James and Gusto will need to find a way to work together, as each has faced challenges in adjusting to the full-back role under Maresca’s management.

Maresca’s tactical approach typically sees one full-back play an inverted role, pushing into central midfield, while the other drops back to bolster the defense, effectively transforming a back four into a back three.

James is expected to be capable of handling either position but has encountered difficulties regaining full fitness after a season marred by injuries.

Gusto has faced similar challenges, having played as a left-back on three occasions, while Levi Colwill has also been experimented with in that position as Marc Cucurella recuperates from Euro 2024.

Maresca has acknowledged that some of his unconventional team selections are part of his effort to “experiment” during pre-season. However, left-back Ben Chilwell has only managed to play 64 minutes and has appeared in two matches from the bench, prompting speculation about his potential departure.

The recent acquisition of goalkeeper Jorgensen from Villarreal adds an intriguing dynamic, as the Blues sought a specialist in playing out from the back to compete with Robert Sanchez. Unfortunately, this move places Djordje Petrovic in a precarious position, likely leading to a short-term loan away from the club.

While the overall atmosphere within the squad appears to be positive under Maresca, the rapid influx of new signings has created a sense of uncertainty among representatives of several players regarding their future, leaving some feeling unsettled.
