Vice President Harris finds herself in a challenging position regarding criminal justice issues.
Over 160 criminal justice advocacy organizations have penned an open letter to Harris, urging her not to label former President Trump as a “criminal” or “felon,” while also encouraging her to adopt their progressive views.
The former district attorney for San Francisco and California’s attorney general has consistently portrayed herself as a determined prosecutor, noting her awareness of Trump’s “type” in light of his recent felony conviction in New York.
“Some may oversimplify the contest between you and former President Trump as a showdown between a ‘tough-on-crime’ prosecutor and a ‘criminal,'” the letter says. “We trust you will avoid this rhetoric and narrative, as it can be detrimental to both us and your campaign.”

The advocacy group commended Harris for her support of criminal justice reform while advising her against using terminology that unfairly stigmatizes individuals with criminal records.
“We believe in your potential as a criminal justice reform leader,” they noted. “Moreover, terms like ‘criminal’ and ‘felon’ cast a wide net that adversely affects over 70 million Americans with criminal records, including 1 in 3 Black men who have felony convictions.”
“She’s a walking contradiction. She shifts with the political winds, aligning herself with whatever direction benefits her career.”
The letter, which gathered signatures from over 160 leaders of organizations ranging from The Bail Project to Beauty after Bars, criticized Trump yet urged Harris to emphasize his past actions instead of his recent felony conviction.
“Hold Donald Trump accountable for his behavior and lack of remorse,” the letter reads. “Discuss the consequences of his actions and policy proposals, but avoid the outdated fear tactics that reinforce the criminalization affecting so many, creating barriers to voting, housing, employment, and freedom.”

The letter emphasizes the difficulties Harris encounters as she attempts to align her hardline stance on crime with her assertions that “everyone needs to be woke.”
Corrin Rankin, the vice chair of the California Republican Party, informed Fox News Digital that Harris’ approach to crime is more about political maneuvering than genuine principles.
“She’s a walking contradiction,” Rankin said. “She adapts to the political climate, shifting towards whatever path serves her career best. She lacks the appearance of someone with strong values—more like a chameleon following the prevailing trend that leads to her success.”
Rankin pointed out that Harris’s career began as the district attorney in San Francisco, where she prosecuted thousands of minorities for minor marijuana offenses, requiring bonds as high as $5,000.
“Black, brown, and Polynesian communities bore the brunt of this,” Rankin added.

However, after becoming California’s attorney general, Harris transitioned into a proponent of criminal justice reform, according to Rankin.
Her office supported Proposition 47, a contentious law that reduced numerous felonies to misdemeanors.
Dubbed the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act by Harris’s office, the law has faced criticism for contributing to a wave of lawlessness in California, a trend that continues.
“I remember the fights we had back then; it felt like we were shouting into the void. But how absurd it was to tell people to vote against safe neighborhoods and schools—it was baffling. It felt deliberate. Decriminalizing serious felonies does not guarantee safety for neighborhoods or schools,” Rankin recalled.

Rankin noted that Harris is currently facing a tough decision regarding which facet of her contradictory persona she will choose to showcase, a situation she cannot “laugh and giggle her way out of.”
“You can’t trust her,” Rankin asserted. “Her only commitment seems to be to herself.”
