He had it secured in his glove. It could have been recorded as one of the most remarkable catches in MLB history.

Sadly for the Boston Red Sox, Wilyer Abreu’s attempt to snag a home run from New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera fell short, as the ball slipped out of the outfielder’s glove.

This took place in the top of the second inning at Fenway Park in Boston when Cabrera sent a ball soaring to deep right field off Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford.

Abreu was tracking the ball intently, racing back as it approached the 380-foot marker on the short wall.

The ball appeared to be heading out of the park, but Abreu propelled himself into the air, all while keeping his eyes locked on the ball.

As the ball descended, it landed in Abreu’s glove, but he crashed into the seats beyond the wall. His legs flew upward, making it look like he had completed an outstanding catch as he raised his glove in triumph during the live broadcast.

However, when Abreu opened his glove, he found it empty. All that effort ended up being in vain as Cabrera rounded the bases, giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead over their division rivals.

Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that Abreu had caught the ball, but it popped out when he collided with the seating area, as his hand and wrist hit the row behind him.

The Red Sox were worried that Abreu might have injured himself after his remarkable attempt to make the catch. However, Abreu was more focused on not being able to keep the ball.

The Boston crowd still erupted in thunderous applause for Abreu’s effort, and his attempt at robbing the home run was praised across social media.

“I love Wilyer Abreu so much for this effort,” MLB Network contributor Jared Carrabis posted on X. “He caught the ball. The ball came loose when he hit the seat. That would have been one of the best catches I’ve ever seen.”

Abreu understands that “almost” will forever be associated with the play, but he also hit a solo home run to ignite a three-run momentum swing for the Red Sox in the first inning, which tied the game.
